AJÁ OJII No.001
AJÁ OJII, meaning “Black Sand” in Igbo, is a meditation on accumulation, repetition, and transformation.
Composed of thousands of hand-rolled paper beads from the Udiri Studio Archive, the work gathers individual forms into a dense, near-continuous surface. Like grains of sand, each bead contributes to a larger field of texture, rhythm, and presence.
Viewed from a distance, the work appears as a singular black plane. Up close, the surface reveals subtle variations, handmade irregularities, and the quiet evidence of time, touch, and repetition.
Using paper, a material often associated with impermanence, AJÁ OJII explores how presence can be built through accumulation. Small gestures become a larger whole. Individual forms become landscape.
Part of Udiri’s ongoing exploration of material transformation, AJÁ OJII invites a slower way of looking.
